The cost of putting Thanksgiving dinner on the table is easier on the wallet in 2009. Average prices of turkey, stuffing, cranberries, pumpkin pie and the rest of the traditional trimmings for a classic Thanksgiving dinner have dropped 4 percent from 2008 to $42.91, according to an American Farm Bureau Federation survey. Turkey prices have dropped 3 cents per pound compared with 2008.

The Salvation Army plans to serve 10,000 free dinners across the city this Thanksgiving - meals planned by a star chef, cooked by one of New York's ritziest caterers and cleaned up by employees of one of Wall Street's most vilified financial firms. The number of meals is 10 times as many as last year and come at a time when more and more Americans are struggling to put food on the table. It's holiday fair time -- here is a listing of fairs and bazaars coming up soon on Cape Ann. Churches in Essex are all holding their fairs on Nov. 21. Holy Family Parish will hold its Christmas Fair on Saturday, Nov. 21 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the St. Ann Church Parish Hall, Pleasant Street, Gloucester. The fair features crafts made by members of the parish, seasonal decorations made by the Ladies Guild, baked goods, International Food table, jewelry, Father Paddy's table, and white elephants.

Did you know that the first Thanksgiving feast wasn't repeated by the Pilgrims? According to History.com, the first feast was a religious holiday set aside to thank God for a bountiful crop after a hard winter, during which most of the colony perished. The Native Americans were invited to the feast because they helped the Pilgrims learn how to plant crops.

In this great time of need throughout the community, many are helping to bring holiday joy to the less fortunate of their neighbors, including Freedom of Road Riders. On Nov. 15, 147 bikes arrived at Bumsteads in Nixa with toys for the Least of These annual Countywide Christmas program. The new toys filled a dozen grocery carts overflowing with dolls, trucks, cars, stuffed animals, games—great toys for kids of all ages.
